EU Blue Card

The EU Blue Card in Germany is a residence and work permit designed to attract highly skilled non-EU/EEA workers to fill jobs that require a particular level of qualification and expertise. To be eligible for the EU Blue Card in Germany, applicants must have a recognized university degree or comparable qualification, along with a binding job offer or employment contract that meets the minimum salary threshold. As of 2024, the minimum salary requirement for EU Blue Card holders in Germany is EUR 58,800 per year (or EUR 47,184 in shortage occupations such as in the fields of mathematics, IT, natural sciences, engineering, and human medicine).

Once granted, the EU Blue Card allows holders to live and work in Germany for up to four years. It also provides a pathway to permanent residency, typically after 33 months of working in a highly skilled occupation or 21 months if the applicant has achieved a B1 level of proficiency in the German language. The EU Blue Card is particularly advantageous as it offers holders and their families the ability to travel freely within the Schengen Area. It serves as a valuable tool for attracting and retaining skilled professionals in Germany’s labor market, contributing to the country’s economic growth and innovation.
